Reiki is a Japanese word for life force energy, which is present in every living thing.
It is an ancient form of healing which was rediscovered by Dr Usui in the 1870's when he was searching for a healing formula.
In this modern fast world we often become cut off from the source of healing energy. By leading stressful lives our energy becomes blocked and stagnated and where there are blockages there is dis-ease, whether it is tension, pain or physical or mental illness.
By receiving healing the energy promotes the receiver's in-built self-healing mechanisms to begin to clear the blockages and improve their mental, emotional, spiritual and physical well-being.
There is no specific belief system required to receive Reiki.
Anyone and everyone can benefit from healing the effect depends on the individual's need, openness and willingness to receive. The outcome may be different from the recipient's expectations. Eg, he may have come with a back problem but if his mental attitudes are blocking his wellness, then these may well come to the surface in order to be healed. Whatever happens, the recipient only receives as much healing as he can handle at that point.
Reiki brings about deep relaxation and a wonderful sense of calm. It is very good for mild depression and restoring balance within the whole being.
The recipient lays down on a couched, fully clothed, or sits in a chair if preferred. The recipient closes his eyes and the healer makes a suggestion to relax and clear his mind. Calming music is usually played.
Then the healer detects where the recipient's blockages are and channels energy through her hands into their energy field – sometimes she will have her hands in their aura and other times on their body.
She usually works on the whole body to promote a balancing effect. Sometimes the healer will give a guided visualisation, to help the recipient to switch off. The recipient may feel deeply relaxed or may fall asleep; he may experience some sensations such as heat, coldness, tingling or pulsing light or see colours. Each healing is different, depending on the recipient’s needs, openness and condition.
